Contact Clustering for Deformable Soil Interaction

Deformable soil simulation involves the computation of interaction forces and of the deformation suffered by soil. According to experimental studies, the deformation suffered by soil under a vertical pressure p depends on the size of the contact patch.

If soil is represented by a height field, after collision detection we have a list of contact points. If the list of contact points correspond to several contact patches, in order to obtain their size we need to group the points.In our poster Contact Clustering for Deformable Soil Interaction we propose the use of hierarchical clustering for this purpose.

To test the method a box has been thrown on soil with different geometries. The next image shows an example with a bumpy soil that generates several separate contact patches.

Sequence of contact patches during the simulation. In this example the number of clusters oscillates because of the vertical oscillation of the colliding object. As the box goes down the different clusters grow in size until they mix together. Then, the box moves up slightly and stops.
